The cost of replacement computers has plummeted of late but has reached
a plateau of approximately $1200 for a capable benchtop machine.
Some schools have
made good use of their older machines by having the server do all the
work and the classroom computer acts as a "client" of the
sever. A Pentium 100MHz machine can appear to be functioning as a Pentium
4 machine by having the server do all the work.
There are two software
systems that allow the client computer to act as a fast benchtop machine:
Citrix
Metaframe
Cost $3850 + $250 Media kit +$250/user
Will allow some multimedia and remote access. Citrix licenses are
concurrent.
Citrix will also allow
remote access dial in in a very secure environment. |
