Intranet Polices

"Knowledge generation really only occurs in teams, where people engage in doing meaningful work."

Peter Senge

Questions you need to ask before implementing an Intranet

  • Can anyone publish to the intranet?
  • Do the users have to use the templates?
  • Who will monitor the intranet?
  • Have the external links been checked?
  • Is there a need for “School Intranet Police”?
  • Who is going to pay for this?
  • What is the philosophy behind the intranet?
  • Who is responsible and at what level?
  • How is security being covered?

To keep sane:

  • Make sure people want this technology.
  • The intranet must meet the technology criteria.
  • There must be a long term plan.
  • This will require a team approach.
  • No dancing dinosaurs! Keep it simple.
  • Select people who are in for the long haul.
  • Start small but plan big.
  • Report back regularly.
  • Celebrate successes.
  • Accept criticism lightly and praise joyfully.

The intranet is a powerful communication and learning tool.
The intranet requires technical skills to construct.
The Intranet must be designed for the long term.
An Intranet is a living knowledge organism. It needs feeding, nurturing and time spent with it!
