The Importance of Standards

Interoperability will depend on each application meeting a range of standards or agreed upon sub-standards.

There are a range of standards for the transfer of data between systems. Standards such as IMS, SCORM and SIF provide a framework for interoperability of different systems. International research (www.irrodl.org/content/v3.2/paulsen.html) indicates that a lack of standards based frameworks has led to considerable issues (such as when data is exchanged), when a variety of systems (SMS, LMS . . . . ) are offered or encouraged without standards being set.

Issues may rise when later on when a vendor offers a PDA or SMS application which schools may want to integrate into their overall solution.

Making the Choice:

  • Not all vendors are equal

  • Direct comparisons are difficult

  • Take into account future trends

  • Make decisions strategically
