Information Management
The Research Process 1

The progress of the research process depends on:

  • The age of the students
  • The ability of the students
  • The total pool of resources available
  • The accessibility of those resources
  • The reliability of the resources
  • The age/ability appropriateness of the resource
  • The timeframe for the research
  • The technical ability of the students
  • The pre-knowledge of the topic/question

The research process must be rational! (The Internet is not the solution to everything).

The Research Process looks at

  • Establishing prior knowledge

  • Develop a semantic field of terms and concepts

  • Assistance in selecting the right tools for research. These include:

      • Available specialist knowledge via:
            • phone
            • fax
            • e-mail
            • personal contact
            • peers
            • ListServ's and Discussion groups

      • Vertical file of magazine and collated articles.

      • Local sources of books and research articles

      • Books and research articles located at a distance (National Libraries etc.)

      • Video and audio resources

      • CD and other non-web digital information sources

      • Web based resources

      • Students own knowledge and understanding

  • Sifting, sorting and scanning information sources to determine:

  • Relevant Quality Criteria are applied.
